Most people eat something touched by yeast every day, bread, beer, wine, and don’t think twice about it. Yet yeast remains one of the least understood ingredients in our food system. That’s what our new video, produced with Living Brand, sets out to change.
From a single cell to industrial scale
The video traces yeast’s journey from a single mother cell, carefully selected in a laboratory, to full industrial production. In just a few days, a few milligrams become tonnes of yeast, supplying bakeries, breweries and food producers across Europe. It’s a process built on precision, science and decades of expertise, yet almost entirely invisible to the people who rely on it every day.
Beyond the bakery
Yeast’s role doesn’t stop there. The video also shows how yeast contributes to human nutrition and health, alternative proteins, sustainable agriculture, bioenergy, pollution control and waste treatment. And nothing goes to waste in the process itself: yeast is grown on co-products like molasses, and its residues are transformed back into natural fertiliser and animal feed, a genuine example of circular economy in practice.
Why this matters
Understanding what yeast actually is, a living microorganism, not a chemical raising agent, is not just a matter of curiosity. In several EU countries, confusion between the two persists on product labels, affecting both consumer choice and the functioning of the internal market. The clearer the science is communicated, the stronger the case for accurate, science-based terminology across EU regulation.
