A sector committed to embracing the circular economy
The European yeast industry is doubly committed to a circular economy:
Upstream, molasses and sugar syrups are used as substrates to grow yeast. These raw materials are co-products of the sugar production process from sugar beet or, less frequently, from sugar cane.
Downstream of the production cycle, the substrates used for growing yeast still contain valuable nutrients. When processed, they can be used as animal feed in the form of vinasse, or as agricultural fertilizer in the form of potassium extract (biofertilizer).
